Bjørnson in a Slovakian rendition
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was known as a champion of the rights of small nations to self-determination, as well as to maintain their language and culture. His efforts won him a place in the hearts of Slovakians that still remains strong 118 years after his death. The King and Queen experienced this personally during their State Visit to Slovakia in 2010.
This afternoon, Their Majesties The King and Queen and Her Highness Princess Astrid, Mrs Ferner, together with President Kiska, were in attendance at the National Theatre for a special performance of Bjørnson’s “Beyond Our Power” by the Slovak National Theatre, which is currently staging a production of the play at home.

During the gala dinner on Monday evening, King Harald spoke of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s inspirational role in both Norway and Slovakia, and concluded his speech with a Bjørnson quote: “‘Good deeds save the world.’ Bjørnson’s actions and values should be a source of inspiration for all of

Björnstjerne Björnson's Stories
THE Björnson who recently visited America, and who has written Magnhild and Dust, differs from the Björnson whose Artie delighted English and American readers sixteen years ago. That was an exquisite pastoral, in which the restlessness of youth was given a poetic form of rare beauty. In Magnhild, the latest of the series of volumes which now presents Björnson’s tales in uniform English dress, there is a restlessness of thought, which springs not from wondering ignorance of life, as in Arne, but from discontent at evils which have been discovered from long and hard experience of the world.
Me find a spiritual chronology in this remarkable series. The earliest stories were the short sketches, Thrond, A Dangerous Wooing, and The Bear Hunter, which immediately preceded the publication of Synnöve Solbakken. Thrond is a curious piece of fantastic writing, in which a boy’s mind, bred among Northern myths, peers out into the world ; everything is seen in a mirage, and the commonest circumstances of life are lifted into the supernatural. A Translated by RASMUS B. ANDERSON. Seven volumes. Boston : Houghton, Mifflin & Co. 1881, 1882.
Dangerous Wooing, more realistic in form, suggests the physical vigor and adventure of youth; while The Bear Hunt
